The University of Maragheh at a Glance
The University of Maragheh was established in 1987 as an Agricultural Research Institute with the purpose of training expert forces at high academic levels. It was promoted to the Faculty of Agriculture in 1999 and upgraded to the Higher Education Center in 2005. Finally, in 2009 the Council of Higher Education Development agreed to designate it as the University of Maragheh. To date, as a state-owned university in the south of East Azerbaijan province, the university continues to fulfill its mission and can be regarded as a young and developing university. The university has trained expert forces, setting quality as its priority. It has been in a position to become a leading academic institution in the region and the country.According to the latest ranking that covers 130 universities, the University of Maragheh stood 30th.This university currently has four faculties of agriculture, science, engineering, and humanities; one institute for astronomy and astrophysics, and one center for technological growth. Students have enrolled in Ph.D., Master’s, and Bachelor’s programs taught by devoted and expert faculty members to accomplish the objectives delineated in Iran’s Vision Document. This university attempts to play an effective role in the higher education system of the region.
The University of Maragheh offers 71 degree courses and has more than 3,000 students in bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. It also has 147 faculty members, of which 17 are full professors, 53 associate professors, 74 assistant professors, and 3 instructors. This university currently has a memorandum of understanding with 12 international universities (from Italy, Azerbaijan, Turkey, the Republic of Cyprus, Mexico, etc.) to exchange professors and students.

University of Maragheh Advances in the 2024 ISC Islamic World University Rankings
The University of Maragheh has achieved a significant improvement in its standing according to the 2024 ISC Islamic World University Rankings, securing a position in the 251–300 range among universities of the Islamic world. This marks an advancement compared to 2023, when the university was ranked within the 301–350 bracket.

University of Maragheh Among Iran’s Top 34 Universities in the 2025 Times Impact Rankings
The University of Maragheh has been recognized among Iran’s leading universities in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which evaluate universities’ contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The university was ranked 15th among comprehensive universities under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, and was also included in the list of the world's most influential universities, with an overall ranking of over 1500.
