Abstract

Abstract: Since the use of nuclear energy and the production of large volumes of nuclear waste, the separation and removal of important and hazardous radionuclides such as strontium has been considered due to its long half-life (half-life of 29 years). In this study, the natural Analcim zeolite obtained from Meshginshahr region was employed for the removal of strontium ions from aqueous solution waste. Since the application of raw form Analcim zeolite didn't provide satisfactory results for the removal of strontium, Lead Hexacyanoferrate-Analcim composite (PbHCF-Ana) was prepared and used for this purpose. In this regard, effective parameters, i.e. pH, adsorbent dosage, strontium initial concentration and temperature at 5 levels (-a, -1, 0, + 1, + a) were investigated and optimized using response surface methodology based on the central composite design (CCD). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that the strontium initial concentration was the most significant parameter on the strontium removal efficiency. According to the obtained results, the predicted values and the actual experimental value obtained for the maximum removal of strontium were 97.32% and 98.24%. Therefore, the final model is considered valid and has satisfactory predictive ability. Also, the adsorption of strontium onto PbHCF-Ana composite was obeyed Langmuir isotherm model.
