Family Caligonellidae was erected by Grandjean (1944) for a monobasic genus Caligonella,
based upon C. humilis Koҫ, 1838. The peritremal arrangement and configuration on the
dorsal surface of the stylophore are used to separate the genera. Members of the this family
are relatively small, free-living predatory mites that feed on small arthropods.
