Abstract

Aim and Background: Biopolymers possess many advantages such as biocompatibility and biodegradability. Hence, in the current work nanofibers of different types of biopolymers, silk fibroin, wheat gluten and poly (vinyl alcohol) were prepared with potential for diverse biomedical applications. Methods: Nanofibers in the current study were prepared by electrospinning method. The obtained nanofibrous mats were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results and discussion: The electrospinning processing condition of the biopolymers were optimized. As, results revealed that the fibrous biopolymers with nanoscale diameter (70-120 nm) and random orientation without beads were successfully obtained in optimized electrospinning process. Conclusion: The developed electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds form biopolymers in the current study can be promising materials for many diverse applications, such as nanofilters, tissue engineering, enzyme immobilization and drug delivery systems.
