Abstract

This study investigates the energy dissipation of flow due to the use of vertical screens with two porosity ratios located downstream of inclined drops. The drops are varied with three different angles, two drop heights, and a relative critical depth that ranges from 0.09 to 0.35. The results indicate that the use of a vertical screen downstream of an inclined drop causes an increase in relative downstream depth of at least 105% and as large as 130%. Compared to a plain inclined drop, the screen also caused an increase of at least 407% and up to 903% in total relative energy dissipation. In all models, inclined drops with vertical screens reduced the Froude number downstream of the structure from a range of 4.49–7.72 for a plain inclined drop to a new range to 1.66–2.11. Equations to estimate the relative downstream depth and relative energy dissipation due to the use of vertical screens are provided with evaluation criteria.
