Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bacteriophages, highly specific-targeting viruses, has been re- emerged as significant promising antimicrobials for post-antibiotic era. Increasing rate of antibiotic resistance, cause some concerns in different sectors especially in therapeutics. Although, one of the most important field of using bacteriophages is medicine, antibacterial activity of phages attracted the attention of researchers to solve the problem of antibacterial resistance in other fields. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recently published peer-reviewed articles with the aid of demonstrating new approaches to use antibacterial potential of bacteriophages in various sectors like biotechnology, remediation and environmental sciences were gained. Then, different possibilities of using antibacterial potential of bacteriophages were surveyed and reviewed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Due to recent advances in genetic engineering technologies, expanding application of bacteriophages in wide range of biotechnology has been explained. This review as a comprehensive guide, showed the relatedness between fundamental information of phages with their application and could bridge some gaps to help better understanding of optimization methods and functional protocols in using bacteriophages. Finding new prospective of bacteriophage applications can open new approaches of using re-emerged bacterial viruses efficiently.
