Abstract

Olive is one of the most important oil crops in arid and semiarid areas. To address water conservation to cope with destructive effects of drought stress on olive oil, some traits of olive fruits cultivar “Zard” as impacted by different irrigation regimes (100% ET, 75% ET and 50% ET) and mulch subjection (olive pomace, animal manure, nylon film, superabsorbent and no mulching) were assessed from May to October 2021. The water requirement of olive plants during the experiment was calculated by Penman-Monteith equation. The plant coefficients the amount of water for drip irrigation was calculated and applied by volumetric meter (every 3 days once). The results indicated that regardless of irrigation status, the highest C16:0 (10.34%), C18:2 (32.56%), C18:3 (7.5%), PUFA (40.06%), and total Chl (3.34 mg.kg−1) were obtained in mulching with olive pomace. C16:0 (45%), C18:2 (30%), C18:3 (46%), PUFA (33%), SFA (25%), PUFA/MUFA (55%) and total Chl (56%) showed a significant decline in drought-severity behavior. In the contrast, C16:1 (23%), C18:0 (41%), C20 (37%), C18:1/C16:0 (97%), C18:1/C18:2 (79%), MUFA (43%), C20 (37%), carotenoid (300%), phenol content (83%) and total flavonoid (113%) improved in olive fruits subjected to 50% ET. It was concluded that olive pomace as a promising mulch covering is recommendable method in the future studies.
