In this paper, Zn-decorated Y zeolite (Zn-DYZ) was synthesized using hydrothermal synthesis method with 1:9, 2:8 and 3:7 Zn/Al ratios. The prepared catalyst was characterized using x-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier transformation infra-red (FT-IR), Ultra violet-visible (UV-Vis), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive spectroscopy EDS techniques. The results revealed that the Zn-Y photocatalyst based on 2:8 Zn/Al ratio showed improved phocatalytic behavior compared with that of Y- zeolite. The insertion of Zn is believed not only improve the surface properties, but also indicate photocatalytic reactivity. Therefore, the functionalization of Y-zeolite with Zn may be a promising method for designing and producing the high performance photocatalytic activity species. The effect of several parameters including catalyst loading, pH effect, methyl orange concentration and Zn loading was investigated in photodegradation reaction. The kinetics of photodegradation was obeyed from pseudo-first order. The mineralization of methyl orange was measured using COD experiment.
