This study was conducted to investigate whether the application of yeast extract (YE) and organo-macro-micro (OMM) as an organic fertilizer could be effective in improving growth characteristics and quantitative and qualitative yield of German chamomile. The experiment was performed as a factorial based on a randomized complete block design with three replications in field condition during the two growing seasons (2021 and 2022). The first factor was arranged as three levels of OMM (non-application, fertigation, and foliar application), and the second factor was included four levels of YE foliar application (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 gL− 1). Results demonstrated that YE and OMM separately or in combination improved plant growth. YE (0.5 gL− 1) + fertigation of OMM presented the highest plant height, while, the highest inflorescences dry weight was observed under YE (1.0 and 1.5 gL− 1) + foliar application of OMM. Foliar application of OMM + YE (1.5 gL− 1) showed the highest flower dry yield in both years. Application of YE with or without OMM led to a significant increase in essential oil content. YE and OMM significantly increased essential oil yield. 22 chemical compounds were identified in the chamomile essential oil and content of the main compounds (α-bisabolol oxide A, chamazulene, cis-en-yn-dicycloether, α-bisabolone oxide A, (E)-β-farnesene) were increased under the influence of YE and OMM application. The application of yeast extract and organo-macro-micro could be an effective strategy for enhancing the growth, yield, and essential oil content, and improving the compositions of the essential oil in the chamomilla plant.
