Four copper(II) metal complexes of functionalized terpyridine ligand and nitrate/azido ligands have been synthesized: [Cu(ftpy)(μ-1,3-N3)(NO3)]n (1), {[Cu2(ftpy)2(μ-1,1-N3)2(μ-NO3)](NO3)∙DMF·H2O}n (2), [Cu2(ftpy)2(μ-1,1-N3)2(H2O)2](NO3)2 (3), [Cu(ftpy)(NO3)(H2O)](NO3)∙DMF (4), where L = ftpy = 4′‐(2-furanyl)-2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine. Formation of respective complex compounds depends on the N3/Cu molar ratio. An equimolar or an excess of azide leads to the formation of compound 1, while a low amount leads to compound 4, in which the coordination sphere is filled only by nitrate ligands. A molar ratio of sodium azide to copper(II) nitrate between 0.6/1 and 0.9/1 leads to the isolation of a product consisting of a mixture of crystals of compounds 2 and 3, which have been described in detail. The structure of all complexes was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, which showed different topologies. Elemental analyses, IR, UV–Vis, LSV and CV spectra were recorded and discussed for complexes 1, 2 and 4. This study contributes to the knowledge of designing compounds with a precisely defined structure, which is crucial from the point of view of subsequent property and possible applications of such systems.
